FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what people ask before and after they start working with Bill.
Working With Bill
Are you taking new clients?
Selectively. Bill takes on a limited number of new clients each year so every client gets the attention their situation needs. Describe your business through the contact form, and he will tell you plainly whether he is the right fit.
What kinds of businesses do you work with?
Established local businesses and growing ones: restaurants, wedding venues, medical and dental practices, farms, real estate, technology and manufacturing, among others. Most are owners who want a CPA for the long term.
What services do you offer?
Corporate tax returns, IRS representation, payroll and monthly accounting.
Do you prepare personal tax returns?
The practice focuses on businesses, and personal returns are not taken on separately. A preparer who specializes in individual returns will serve you better.
How much do you charge?
Work is billed hourly. What a business needs varies too much for a flat price to mean anything, so it starts with a conversation about your situation. After that, Bill can tell you what the work is likely to involve.
Will I work with you or with staff?
With Bill. He prepares and reviews the work himself, and your questions come straight to him.
How do I get started?
Send a short description of your business and what you need through the contact form. Bill will reply to set up a time to talk. If it is a good fit, you start working together.
Location and Licenses
Where are you located?
Gardnerville, Nevada, in the Carson Valley. Clients are around Lake Tahoe on both the Nevada and California sides, the Carson Valley, Carson City and Reno.
Can you work with a California business?
Yes. Bill is licensed in both Nevada and California, so businesses on either side of the lake, or with operations in both states, are covered.
What are your office hours?
Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Notices and Audits
What happens if I get a letter from the IRS or the state?
Send it to Bill the day it arrives. Most notices have a clear path. He will review it, tell you exactly what happens next, and handle the response. You do not need to call the agency yourself.
Can you represent me in an audit?
Yes. As a CPA, Bill can represent you before the IRS and before Nevada and California tax agencies. You sign a power of attorney form, and he deals with the examiner for you.
Can you guarantee the outcome of an audit or a refund?
No one honestly can. What you get is careful work, every legitimate position, and nothing filed that cannot be defended.
Payroll and Accounting
Can you run our payroll?
Yes. Bill runs payroll on schedule and handles the federal and state payroll filings that go with it, including W-2s and 1099s at year end.
What does monthly accounting include?
Each month the bank accounts are reconciled, accounts payable is handled and the books are balanced, so your numbers are accurate all year and tax time starts from a clean set of records.
When do you need my documents?
It depends on the return and your deadlines. Bill sends a list of what he needs, with dates, well ahead of each deadline.
